Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk is an experimental audio sampler and granular synthisizer that takes the physical form of a pillow. The project aims to explore the media trope of screaming into the pillow. Traditionally when someone is featured on screen with their face submerged in a pillow, they are doing it to muffle their pain and problems. My instrument aims to counter this narrative and instead of muffling the sound of the user, resampling it and reshaping their words into something completely new.

Distinct touch points on the Pillow allow for performers to record their voice into a granular synthesizer running in Ableton. Each patch on the pillow applies a specific modulation technique but with randomness applied to how it's being applied, giving the performer agency but not complete control. A teensy microcontroller is responsible for reading in the touch points and sending midi data into Ableton.
