Dissonance aims to introduce intimacy into the process of creating electronic music. By replacing the mechanical knobs of the synthesizer with living plants, and the act of “patching” the synthesizer with mechanical branches, we are able to distort the agency and feedback between the musician and the music making device.

The actual instrument consists of a garden containing 16 individual plants, multiple sensors, and a series of micro controllers collecting data from the garden. The garden is connected to a modified analog synth, which has attachments which allow for direct control of its sound and parameters via the natural interface.
